The journey begins in the capital, Chisinau, where you’ll start with a walk past its City Hall, an Italian Gothic-style building that exemplifies Moldova’s eclectic architecture. Expect some charming photo opportunities and a chance to appreciate the city’s blend of old and new.
Next, the tour visits Stefan cel Mare Park, a lovely spot with busts of Moldovan and literary figures, perfect for a brief stroll among locals. The railway station offers a glimpse of the city’s connectivity, though it’s a passing mention rather than a focus.
You will spend about 4/5 hours visiting all the popular sites of this little gem of a city.
Early morning, you’ll head to Tighina Fortress in Bender, built in the 15th century by Moldova’s Prince Stephen the Great. This site is especially meaningful, as it showcases Moldova’s medieval history and its strategic importance.
Following that, you’ll cross into Tiraspol, the de facto capital of Transnistria—a self-proclaimed republic still under the influence of the former Soviet Union. Here, the Tank Monument and Soviet statues evoke a sense of time frozen in the Cold War era. These monuments, including a Soviet T-34 tank, are potent symbols of the region’s complex history.
Your guides shine when explaining the significance of these sites, and travelers often find themselves captivated by the unique blend of nostalgia and resilience that characterizes Tiraspol. From the House of Soviets to De Wollant Park, the city feels like stepping into a Soviet history book.
the morning will start with a drive to Comrat, the heart of Gagauzia, Moldova’s autonomous territorial unit. The Gagauz people are Turkic-speaking Christians with a distinct culture, and this day is dedicated to experiencing their way of life.
The Gagauz Sofrasi complex offers a delicious introduction to local cuisine, with traditional dishes and a chance to see guest houses decorated in ethnic style. You get to taste authentic Gagauzian food, a highlight for food lovers and cultural enthusiasts alike.
The Comrat Museum of History provides context about the region’s past and present, while the monument of Lenin recalls the Soviet influence that shaped much of Moldova’s history. The tour ends with a visit to the Tank Monument again, but this time in the context of Gagauzia’s history.
