I had a wonderful day with Natalia – she picked me up from the city center and drove me personally out to Old Orhei. We had a nice talk along the way where I asked her about herself and about her life in Moldova and she told me more about the road we were traveling on and the surroundings, before we got to our destination. Once in Old Orhei, we visited the monastery and the new church and then I had a nice lunch in one of the village restaurants. This was a great way to get to see a preserved part of Moldovan life and be outdoors and away from the city.
Our tour guide, Natalia, was extremely down to earth. She managed to carry the conversation both professionally speaking and personally. She adds unexpected nice touches to the tour–such as purchasing candles for you to light within the monastery.
The views from the Complex are beautiful and well worth the excursion outside of the city!
Our particular tour included an authentic Moldavian feast. You will not be disappointed in the quality of the restaurant hospitality and food. A definite highlight!

After pickup, begin your journey with a scenic drive to the Old Orhei (Orheiul Vechi) region, one of Moldova’s most remarkable historical and cultural sites. Located on the banks of the Răut River, Old Orhei is an open-air archaeological and historical complex set in the countryside, featuring spectacular caves carved into limestone cliffs.
During the visit, you will explore ancient cave monasteries, including the oldest Orthodox skete, “Peștere”, approximately 60 meters above the river. This serene setting offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding valley.
After exploring Old Orhei, continue to “Pivnițele din Brănești”, one of Moldova’s most impressive underground wineries. Enjoy a guided wine tour and tasting, sampling a selection of white and red wines, sparkling wines, dry, semi-dry, and dessert wines. The winery is especially renowned for its vintage wines and those produced using special technologies, such as Madeira, Marsala, and pastoral-style wines.
