What to Expect

This tour will take you to a strange, unrecognised region of Transnistria that broke away from Moldova under tense circumstances in 1990. Despite their attempts to become a recognized country, the region has not been granted that status either by the international community or Russia in spite of the fact that 65% of the population are Russian speakers.
Since the short, but bloody military conflict between Transnistria and Moldova in 1992 things have been rather quiet which allows to call it “a frozen conflict”. De-Jure this country doesn’t exist, but de-Facto it does as it has its own institutions of governance, such as: President, Parliament, Ministries, Security Service, Tax Office, money (Transnistrian ruble).

A part of the brotherhood of breakaway nations, it is one of the few places in the world to see the embassies of Caucasus breakaway states South Ossetia and Abkhazia. From a vast amount of Communist relics and a Soviet way of life, there is arguably nowhere else like Transnistria on earth.

There is a checkpoint between Moldova and Transnistria. Please, bear in mind: your passport WILL NOT get stamped. We will also visit Bender fortfess (where The Swedish King Carl XII lived for 4 years) and splendid Neamt monastery to see the tallest bell tower in Eastern Europe (70 meters tall).

Day 2

Our guide will meet you in the lobby of your hotel for a day trip to Cricova winery

There are few wineries in the world that still produce sparkling wines according to the traditional Champenoise method and Cricova is one of them. During this tour you will explore its endless galleries, remarkable wine collection, a winemaking museum and even the underground church. After learning the remuage and degorgement process, you will have the rare opportunity to taste few types of white, rose and red sparkling wines.

Cricova is a unique underground complex that got renowned for both its huge labyrinths and excellent wines. For the last 60 years it creates the sparkling wine by the method of the famous monk Dom Pierre Perignon, which requires secondary fermentation in the glass and subsequent cuvée ageing. The wine maturation is done fully in the underground cellars, boasting 120 km in total length. Here, endless lines of stands are holding the bottles at a certain angle, waiting to be shaken every day, so they could become crystal clear. Currently Cricova is home to 1.3 mln bottles and 640 types of wine. The oldest wine in the collection and the only one of its kind in the world is the wine „Easter Jerusalem”, produced in just one batch in 1902. After the guided tour you will be invited in one of their tasting halls for a memorable sparkling wine tasting. It is here where the sommelier will tell you about the story of the bubbles in your glass.

After your tour of the winery ends our guide drive you to the centre of Chisinau for a small city centre walking tour for about 2 hours, before retuning you to your hotel.
